Nestled in the heart of Epirus, the trail to the Monastery of Stomiou offers hikers a unique blend of natural beauty, spiritual serenity, and a touch of adventure.
Starting from the iconic stone bridge of Konitsa, this moderately challenging hike takes you alongside the Aoos River, through lush forests and rugged terrains, culminating at the historic monastery perched at an elevation of approximately 650 meters.
The journey begins at the Konitsa stone bridge, a remarkable 19th-century structure that stands as a testament to traditional Epirus craftsmanship. From here, a dirt road on the right bank of the Aoos River leads you for about 2 kilometers to a small concrete dam. Beyond this point, a well-trodden path meanders through dense forests of hornbeam and hop hornbeam trees, offering hikers a serene environment filled with the sounds of nature.
As you ascend, the trail becomes steeper, challenging your endurance but rewarding you with breathtaking views of the Aoos Gorge. The Monastery of Stomiou, built in 1774, stands as a beacon of spiritual significance. Despite being destroyed during World War II, the monastery has been restored and continues to function as an active monastic community.
